Passageway Project

About the k street project
Concept
K Street Passageway Activation Project is a plan to use innovative light technology to illuminate a pedestrian passageway connecting historical Sacramento with modern Sacramento. Our vision is to create a new, inviting space for visitors and locals that fills the pedestrian passage with interactive light and art displays celebrating the history and culture of Sacramento. The pedestrian passage will also provide a continually changing venue for engaging, family-friendly artworks connected to community festivals, fairs and markets. Location
The location in placed directly in the heart of downtown Sacramento. Running directly under the I-5 corridor, the K Street pedestrian passageway provides a vital link from historic to modern Sacramento. Just two blocks from the newly constructed Golden 1 Center, the K Street pedestrian passageway is uniquely situated to funnel concert and game-goers into historic Sacramento’s unique storefronts, numerous dining options, and historical landmarks.

Vision

We are inspired to use technology to improve the experience of pedestrians traveling through the passageway by creating interactive, playful designs. The K Street Passageway Activation Project aims to refurbish an existing public space to create an environment more inviting to tourists and residents alike, while highlighting the history and culture of Downtown Sacramento.
We envision not just a novel public passageway, but an inventive display of how technology can alter our public spaces. Throughout this process, we aim to involve the local community, allowing the residents of Sacramento to have a say in the future of their city. Once built, the K Street pedestrian passageway will be transformed into a destination for adults and children alike.
TECHNOLOGY
A team of students at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California, are developing two different forms of technology to integrate into the passageway. The first is a lighting system that creates a welcoming and warm feeling into the space. The lights are placed into a patterned grid, creating a sky-like light and a feeling of infinite sky above. This technology is designed to make the space feel bigger and not confined by the walls around it. Second is the integration of augmented reality, which is how our team brings to life the artwork and the historical timeline that is currently in the passage. Using a technological device, pedestrians can interact with the space around them, which is creating a new learning experience for those who travel through the space. These tools create an additional element to the passage, and are devised to have commuters and tourists pause to experience the space around them.
