Cal Poly’s LAES, Architecture, and Computer Science programs are eager to continue this exciting K Street collaboration with the business associations and city offices of Sacramento, and plan to remain a central partner in the design, development, and implementation stages of the project, seeing it all the way to completion. But to remain connected for the next few years, Cal Poly requires continuing funding to support these student and faculty development teams.
Our current one-year seed funding from the Hearst Foundation expires at the end of July, 2018. Once the seed funding expires, our collaboration can not proceed until partner support funds are in place for the next year. To maintain the minimum level of support necessary for this project, the Cal Poly development teams require at least $30,000 which is the base funding from the Hearst Foundation. This amount of funding allows the teams to continue their work, and unlocks additional in-kind support from the university. To put this in perspective, the augmented reality programming work already completed for the project, leveraged extensive campus technological and programming resources to create a working demo that if produced by a commercial organization would have cost at least $70,000-$80,000 more. Every dollar raised to continue this collaboration produces design and development solutions that would cost the City of Sacramento five or six times more from commercial providers. Contributing to this fund provides a unique learn-by-doing project for hundreds of Cal Poly students to work at the center of a vital addition to the cultural life of California’s capital city.
